COSHH Training Courses

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 set out how employers must assess and control the risks created by hazardous substances at work. From cleaning chemicals and dust to fumes, vapours and biological agents, many employees come into contact with substances that could affect their health if handled incorrectly.

This online COSHH awareness training course gives employees a clear introduction to the regulations and the practical steps they should follow when using, storing or working near hazardous substances. Learners will understand how to recognise common hazards, reduce exposure and follow workplace control measures in line with UK health and safety requirements.

What Is COSHH Awareness Training?

COSHH stands for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health. The COSHH Regulations require employers to assess risks from substances that could harm employee health and put suitable control measures in place.

A hazardous substance may be something bought for use at work, such as paint, glue, solvent or cleaning fluid. It may also be created by a work activity. Examples include silica dust from cutting materials, wood dust from sanding, welding fumes and vapours released during manufacturing.

COSHH Regulations and Legal Responsibilities

Learners are introduced to the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 and the responsibilities shared by employers and employees. Employers must assess and control exposure, while employees must follow instruction, use control measures properly and report problems.

Health Effects and Routes of Exposure

The course explains how hazardous substances may appear as solids, liquids, dusts, fumes, mists, gases, vapours or biological agents. It also covers how exposure may affect employee health depending on the substance, route of exposure, amount involved and frequency.

Warning Labels and Hazard Symbols

Learners explore the labels and pictograms used to warn people about chemical hazards.

COSHH Risk Assessment

A COSHH risk assessment should identify which substances may cause harm, who could be exposed, how exposure could happen, what controls are already in place and whether further action is needed.

The assessment should reflect real conditions, including whether a substance is sprayed, heated or used in an enclosed space.

Control Measures and Protective Equipment

Control measures may include removing the substance, replacing it with a safer option, changing the work process, enclosing the activity, improving ventilation, restricting access or introducing safer cleaning and disposal procedures.

PPE should not automatically be treated as the first or only solution. Controlling the hazard at source is usually more reliable than depending only on an individual wearing protective equipment.

Safe Handling, Storage and Emergency Action

Learners consider correct containers, clear labels, the separation of incompatible substances and the importance of following spill procedures. Employees should know how to raise the alarm and follow emergency arrangements.
